 Stockholm
proved an ideal venue for the 26th Congress. The Scientific Committee
is to be congratulated on the quality of the program. Dr. Jack McAninch
who structured the teaching sessions is to be commended for a very
popular addition to our Congress Program. Besides enjoying an excellent
Congress, we were blessed with the warmest autumn in Stockholm in
250 years. Congratulations to Prof. Peter Ekman and his team. In
June 2003, the SIU will co-sponsor the International Consultation
on Erectile and Sexual Dysfunction in Paris, in conjuction with
ICUD. In October we have the SIU Uro-Oncology meeting in Sharm El-Sheik,
Egypt.

 With
Congresses planned for 2004 in Hawaii, 2006 in Cape Town, and 2007
in Paris, along with smaller meetings being organized in the off
years, a steady workload will result, making the operation efficient
and financially advantageous to the Society.
New quarters have been arranged in central Montreal, and three new
staff members have already been added. We are confident that member
services and communications will improve substantially by having
both the Society and Congress offices under the same roof. This
will allow us to improve communication to the members this newsletters
such as this one, to enhance the content and the resources on the
SIU website, and to incorporate the functions of Congress and Meeting
organization within one administrative office.
During 2003, we will strive to revitalize the interaction between
the SIU and the Foundation, particularly in the area of fellowships
and training. We are also seeking sites for Congress to follow the
Society's Centennial in 2007. The National Delegates of interested
countries should contact the Central Office for details.

 Dear
Member,
Greetings from SIU Indian section!
26th SIU meeting was held earlier last year at Stockholm from sep
8-12. There were rich scientific presentations on various aspects
of Urological problems. Current consensus on BPH, Prostate cancer,
bladder cancer, Erectile Dysfunctions, GU trauma, stone disease
etc. were discussed during plenary sessions. More than 800 papers
were presented. About 3000 delegates participated in the conference.
Dr.Mostafa Elhilali, General Secretary of
SIU, described the society as only truly international Urological
society covering 96 countries with more than 4000 members. He
stressed that SIU is committed to 'Improving Urological Care Worldwide'
and going to concentrate on Education and Training particularly
to young urologists and those from developing world.
In this regard SIU has taken few major steps:
- It has adopted BJU international as its official Journal.
- Started Trainee Fellowships for young urologist (currently 10
to 12 of these are awarded annually).
- It has decided to provide teaching material to Training Centers.
- Equip or help to maintain the needy center in most remote part
of the world.
- Organize small meetings in between the annual congresses. Uro-oncology
is being organised in Egypt in year 2003.
- SIU has been involved in arranging reciprocal Guest lecture
programme with other Urological Associations.
As
you are aware we also have SIU guest lecture in our annual meeting
of USI. Last Year Dr. Jack McAninch delivered SIU guest
lecture at Guwahati during USICON 2003. In this respect I was also
selected to deliver SIU guest lecture in plenary session of American
Urological Association meeting at Chicago in April, 2003. SIU has
also been involved in collaboration with International Consultation
on Urological Diseases like Stone disease and Trauma Consultation.
SIU has been committed, over the years, to Science, Education and
Fellowship. Dr. M.J.Rochford has become the President. He
has been actively involved in SIU function for more than a decade.
He is committed to further Internationalization of Society. He believes,
Urologist must evaluate
newer techniques such as laparoscopic surgery, which has been used
by other section of surgical community, and adopt in one's practice
so that Urological problems remain within the province of our society.
I had a feeling that they respect Urological work in India and they
also feel we have something to contribute Internationally. Many
papers of good work were presented by India at Stockholm and five
of us were faculty. I appeal to all the members of Urological Society
of India to take the advantage of becoming a member of SIU. Besides
getting BJU there are many advantages. Membership fee is very nominal
i.e. $33.

| SIU Launches First-Time Meeting In
Off Year |
| |
|
| |
 For
the Society Internationale d'Urologie, this Uro-Oncology Congress
marks in important new initiative. Indeed, this is the first time
that the SIU will organize a meeting in the year between its international
Congresses.
As a first in the series, we are very fortunate to have secured
the beautiful Sinai Peninsula resort of Sharm El-Sheikh as our meeting
venue. We encourage participants to take advantage of the unique
surroundings, be it for diving, golfing, water sports, beach and
poolside relaxation, and desert safari or for the marvelous sightseeing
opportunities both locally and in other regions of this ancient
country:
The Congress will also see the beginning of a Consultation on Bladder
Cancer that will be completed in 2004 at the SIU Congress in Honolulu.
The Sharm El-Sheikh segment of this Consultation will emphasize
bladder cancer secondary to schistosomiasis, the type most prevalent
in Egypt.
We hope you will join us in Sharm El-Sheikh this autumn to help
launch this important facet of the SIU's activities. For details
on the program, registration, hotel accommodation or pre-and post-Congress
tours, please contact the Congress Secretariat at: siu2003@uroegypt.com

One of the SIU's prime objectives, through
its Central Office, is to reach and implement new ways of reaching
its members by expanding the scope of its Newsletter and enriching
the content of its website to enhance its outreach goals and facilitate
networking opportunities for its members.

| Stockholm Highlights |
|
| |
|
| |
Those of us fortunate enough to have attended the SIU Congress
last autumn (September 8-12, 2002) in Stockholm, Sweden, will
recall a collage of pleasant memories: the glorious weather, combined
with the warmth of our Swedish hosts and the austere beauty of
the city of Stockholm, indeed created quite an unforgettable experience
for the 4,000 - plus participants from 107 countries.
The social and cultural program put together by the Local Organizing
Committee, presided by Dr. Peter Ekman, showcased a bright palette
of Stockholm's attractions: from the concert of Swedish music
at the stately Stockholm Cathedral in the old town, to SIU night
at Skansen - Stockholm's unique open-air museum filled with Viking
lore and Nordic tradition - to the elegant banquet at City Hall's
Gold Room, which hosts the Noble Prize gala on December 10 each
year.
The Scientific program committee, headed by Dr. Yves Fradet, assembled
an exciting series of well - attended sessions that kept a momentum
of interest until the final sessions adjourned. In addition, the
various guest lectures provided attendees with dynamic and though
provoking talks. SIU-Yamanouchi Award laureate Dr. Alvaro Morales
addressed the topic of aging and urology in the 21st century;
EAU Lecturer Dr. Claude Abbou delivered a presentation on the
state of the art in robotic surgery; AUA speaker Peter Scardino
addressed the natural history, prognosis and surgical treatment
of localized prostate cancer, while CAU nominee Dr. Sami Arap
addressed genital and urinary reconstruction for bladder exstrophy
and epispadias.
Over 1,100 abstracts were submitted for the Stockholm Congress,
a testimony to the vitality of the urological community and the
interest generated by this prestigious event.
The Exhibit Hall enjoyed constant traffic at all hours of the
day, with 51 exhibiting companies present. The non-moderated poster
displays proved to be very well attended, as were the ever-popular
video library and the Internet cafe.
Congratulations and thanks to Peter Ekman and his Committee colleagues,
as well as the local staff and suppliers who contributed to the
success of the 26th Congress. Tack sa Mycket!
Live Hypospadias Surgery in Stockholm an Unqualified Success
Participants at the SIU Course on Hypospadias repair were treated
to a very special learning experience. The full-day course, attended
by over 50 urologists and pediatric surgeons, featured liver surgery
and moderated discussions using a faculty of world experts.
Three separate operation rooms at the Uppsala University Hospital
were equipped with video and audio feeds to the discussion hall.
The surgery was performed by Drs. Joao Pippi Salle of Canada,
Goran Lackgren of Sweden, Antoine Khoury of Canada and Warren
Snodgrass of the USA. In all, seven patients were treated during
the day. Drs. Gianantonio Manzone of Italy and P.S. Malone of
the U.K. moderated the discussions.
