VIU (Visual internal urethrotomy)

What is it?

It is one of the simplest and commonly performed endoscopic surgical techniques for the management of urethral stricture disease.

How it is done?

In this technique the urethral passage is wide opened by cutting the narrowest part of the urethra with cold knife under direct vision. This can be done as a day care operation and the catheter has to be kept as splint for 48 to 72 hrs depends upon the density of the stricture. If the stricture is soft sometime it can be curative with this technique ,some time needs self dilatation after the procedure if the stricture is dense. But the success rate are less compared to open urethroplasty .
