In this surgery, the urinary bladder and the surrounding structures like prostate and seminal vesicle in men and fat around the bladder are removed. After removal of the urinary bladder the urine is stored and evacuated through the normal passage by creating a new bladder using the intestine. The goal of radical cystectomy is to achieve a surgical cure.
On occasion, the procedure may be performed as a palliative procedure when the symptoms of the disease are severe. For example, local symptoms such as severe bleeding in the urine or frequency often necessitate cystectomy and urinary diversion along with adjunctive chemotherapy. The surgery can be performed by either open or laparoscopic or robotic asisted techniques.
