Dr. Mohan M Rajapurkar, Medical Director, Member, Board of Governors & Head of Nephrology; and Dr. Rupin Shah, Consultant Andrologist & Micro Surgeon, of Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, Nadiad (MPUH) have been selected for the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for the year 2007 in the category of ‘Development of Specialties’.

The awards were announced by the Management Committee of Dr. B.C. Roy National Award Fund.  The Award Fund was instituted by the Medial Council of India in 1962 to perpetuate Dr. B.C. Roy’s memory.  Dr. Roy believed that “swaraj would remain a dream unless the people were healthy and strong in mind and body.” He was both Gandhiji’s friend and doctor The nation honoured Dr. Roy with the Bharat Ratna on February 4, 1961.  The Awards are given to eminent persons in the categories of ‘Eminent Medical Person’; ‘Statesmanship of the Highest Order in our Country’; ‘Medical man-cum-Statesman’; ‘Eminent person in Philosophy’, and ‘Eminent person in Arts’.  The award is of the value of Rs. 1,00,000 and a Silver Salver in each of the categories.

Dr. M M Rajapurkar has been associated with MPUH since its inception.  An internationally well-known Nephrologist, Physician and a dedicated teacher, he is also the Convener of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) Registry of the Indian Society of Nephrology.  MPUH is presently the designated institution for maintaining the CKD Registry.  He is a Life Member of Association of Physician of India; Indian Society of Nephrology; Indian Medical Association; Indian Society of Organ Transplantation; International Society of Nephrology; American Society of Nephrology and Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India.  He is also a recognized Teacher in Nephrology for training students for DNB (Nephrology) since 1992 and is an Examiner for DNB (Nephrology) conducted by the National Board of Examinations, Government of India.

Dr. Rupin Shah is a world-renowned Andrologist and Microsurgeon.  Besides, MPUH, he is also associated with Bhatia Hospital and Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai.  He is a Member of Urological Society of India; International Society for Sexuality & Impotence Research and Indian Society for Reproductive Medicine.  His special areas of interest include Male infertility & impotence clinical research.

For Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, the pioneers in introducing ultra modern medical facilities in India in the field of nephro-urology, it is a time of great celebrations.  This year, the hospital is celebrating its completion of 30 years of selfless service.  Four other Doctors of the Hospital (Dr. Mahesh Desai, Managing Trustee and Chairman of the Department of Urology, MPUH; Dr. Sharad D Bapat, Consultant Urologist & Director, Post-Graduate Teaching in Urology, MPUH; Dr. Shriram S Joshi, Consultant Pediatric Urologist & Professor, Department of Urology, MPUH, and Dr. V N Acharya, Consultant Nephrologist & Director-Professor, Post-Graduate Studies in Nephrology, MPUH) have received this prestigious Award in the past.  Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital to have 6 Doctors as recipients of this prestigious award is, no doubt, a unique achievement indeed.
