MPUH Nadiad doctors win ‘Dr S S Bapat prize for innovation in urology’ (USICON, Kolkata, 2011) for Gloves model for laparoscopic pyeloplasty suturing

Although laparoscopic pyeloplasty is considered to be gold standard, the technical difficulty of laparoscopic suturing limits its wide spread application. Dr Akhilesh Kumar and Dr Ramen Kr Baishya developed a simple model made of surgical glove for training of laparoscopic pyeloplasty suturing under able guidance of Dr Abraham Kurien and Dr Mahesh R Desai. The little finger and palm area of the gloves were used to simulation of ureter and pelvis respectively. A Foley, s catheter was introduced through the tip and balloon was inflated in the pelvis. The model was fixed over a foam and placed in a 3-D med endotrainer. Laparoscopic pyeloplasty was performed using Andersons Hyne’s technique. More than 25 trainees have been benefited from this model so far .This model demonstrated satisfying fidelity and practicality in a prospective study. It could be easily be made, cost is very less and it increases the confidence level of trainees.
