Robotic-assisted surgery at MPUH, Nadiad

The Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) in Nadiad has become the first hospital in Gujarat to acquire the latest state-of-the-art robotic surgical system. The robot operated by doctors will be used for surgeries on patients suffering from cancer of the kidneys, bladder and the prostrate.

Dr Mihir Desai, Professor of Urology and Director of Robotic Surgery at University of Southern California who performed eight robotic-assisted surgeries (four radical prostatectomy, two nephrectomy, and one each of partial nephrectomy and pyeloplasty) during 25-27 September, 2010 said: The advantages of the robotic system are immense. It gives the doctor superior visibility, accuracy, flexibility, considerably reduces the blood loss and the invasion is also minimal. Robotic surgery has expanded exponentially and it is great to see the benefit of this technology will be available to more patients in India. He said "robotic surgery is the future and in the US 90 per cent of the prostrate operations are performed in this manner."

Dr Mahesh Desai, Medical Director and Managing Trustee of MPUH said: "The cost will not be a hindrance to the patients. We are a no-profit-no-loss institution. The charges here are much less than the corporate hospitals. In the future we will get more robots like this and we also plan to have a robotic training centre."
