Health Minister inaugurates new department at MPUH

Gujarat Health Minister Jaynarayan Vyas inaugurated the new Department of Uro Oncology, built at a cost of Rs 50 million, at the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH).

The minister, after inaugurating the new department, expressed his happiness over the growth and development of MPUH as an institution of excellence. He said Gujarat is already in the forefront of medical education and healthcare, and envisioned the emergence of the state as a prime destination for medical tourism.

Dr Mark Soloway, who is an icon in genito-urinary oncology, in his address, said ''Urology is a broad area, and there is a need for developing uro oncology as a sub-specialty. It requires specialized training in surgery and technical aspects. Data base development is also an important requirement.''

Mr Rohit J Patel, Chairman, MPUH, recalled that 32 years ago, his father Jayaramdas Patel started this Urological Hospital in memory of his revered father Muljibhai Patel. He had only one vision to set up a not-for-profit kidney hospital to deliver the best medical treatment to any patient, under one roof, irrespective of his economic condition. He observed that while cancer is a dreaded disease, genito urinary cancer is the largest group of cancer affecting mankind.
Unfortunately, in India they are diagnosed late and therefore nothing much can be done.
