International workshop on LESS technique begins at Nadiad urological hospital

Vadodara : A three-day international workshop on Laparoscopic-Endoscopic Single Site surgery (LESS) has been hosted by Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) in Nadiad. The workshop, which started on Thursday, has over 145 Indian and international delegates attending the seminar.

A live demonstration of LESS was held at the event. LESS is one of the latest surgery techniques. It avoids major scar formations and causes minimal loss of blood, said Mahesh Desai, Director, Jayaramdas Patel Academic Centre, MPUH.
Under this technique, the operation is performed with a small incision in the naval avoiding any additional scares on the body. As per statistics, till date, not more than 1,000 operations have been performed across the globe with the LESS technique. This technique is slowly picking up. At Nadiad, we have conducted over 60 cases in the last 18 months.

The technique is usually done in simple urological cases like removal of non-functional kidney or removal of a donors kidney in case of kidney transplantation, and said Desai. Desai has recently been elected the president of the Society International 'Urology (SIU), head-quartered in Canada. He is the first Indian to have been elected for the post and will take charge in 2011.
