Dr Mahesh Desai elected SIU President-Elect


Dr. Mahesh Desai elected as President-Elect of Society International d'Urology (SIU)

Dr. Mahesh Desai, Managing Trustee and Chairman, Department of Urology, Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital, Nadiad was elected as the President-Elect of the Society Internationale d'Urologie (SIU) at its 30th World Congress held in Shanghai, China during November 1-5, 2009.

Dr. Maheshbhai is the first Indian to have been honoured by this coveted position. It is a recognition that has brought pride and prestige not only to him and the Nadiad Kidney Hospital, but to the entire nation. With this honor, Nadiad has reaffirmed its position as the Urology capital of India! This is also expected to propel the growth of India as a preferred destination for international medical tourism.

SIU is the world's truly international professional organization serving the global community of urologists. Today, it has more than 4000 members from more than 100 countries. Founded in Paris in 1907, the SIU Central Office now serves its members from its new premises in Montreal, Canada.

Dr.Mahesh Desai obtained his medical education from B.J. Medical College, Pune University. He completed his M.S. in General Surgery from Pune University in the year 1970. He received fellowship (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh in 1973. In U.K. he obtained specialized training in Urology. He joined hands with Dr. V.V. Desai and established Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital in a rural area Nadiad with the aim of providing most modern treatment for the common man. He is the Chairman of the Department of Urology since 1983. He also became the Managing Trustee of the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital and Honorary Managing Director of Muljibhai Patel Society for Research in Nephro-Urology since 16th February, 2001.

He was the President of the Urological Society of India for the year 2006-2007.

7) Member, American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons.
8) Member, Editorial Board of the Journal of Endourology.

Dr. Maheshbhai has adapted the most modern treatment for the stone disease, and developed innovative techniques in Percutaneous Nephrolithotripsy (PCNL), Ureteroscopy and ESWL. He has done more than 7000 PCNL, probably the largest series in the world. He expanded the use of ultrasound in Urology and established the service of kidney transplantation in Gujarat. He did his first transplant in 1980, the first in Gujarat. 1821 Renal Transplants have been done so far at the institution.

He received the prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy National Award for the year 2000 in "Recognition of the best talents in encouraging the development of Specialties in different branches of Medicine" from the President of India. He has received several national and international awards.

Under his leadership, India hosted for the first time, the World Congress on Endourology at Mumbai, in November, 2004.
