Biographical Sketch

Dr.Mahesh Desai obtained his MBBS (1966) and M.S. in General Surgery (1970) from B.J. Medical College, Pune University. He received fellowship (FRCS) from the Royal College of Surgeons of London and Edinburgh in 1973. In U.K.he obtained specialized training in Urology. He returned to India and started his practice at Ahmedabad. Soon he realized the importance of institutionalized treatment for various kidney diseases.In the year 1976 he joined hands with Dr. V.V. Desai and established Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) in a rural area Nadiad in the State of Gujarat in India with the aim of providing most modern treatment for the common man.

He was the Chairman of the Department of Urology since 1983 till 12th June, 2010. He is the Managing Trustee of the MPUH and Honorary Managing Director of Muljibhai Patel Society for Research in Nephro-Urology since 16th February, 2001.  Since 12th June, he is  also the Medical Director of MPUH. He also holds the position of Director of Jayaramdas Patel Academic Centre. He has held many national and international positions in the field of Urology, some of which are:

He has mastered the most modern treatment for the stone disease and developed innovative techniques in Percutaenous Nephrolithotrispy (PCNL), Ureteroscopy and ESWL. So far he has done more than 12000 PCNL, probably the largest series in the world. He expanded the use of ultrasound in Urology and established, for the first time, the service of kidney transplantation in Gujarat. He did his first transplant in 1980. 1845 Renal Transplants have been done so far at MPUH. He organized the epidemiological survey for prostatic diseases in ageing male population in Kheda / Charotar district, Gujarat, India.

He was the then Treasurer, Hon. Secretary and the President of the West Zone Chapter of Urological Society of India and he also the Treasurer of Urological Society of India. He was the Chairman of the Endourological Section of Urological Society of India. He also was the National Delegate of Society International d' Urologie.

He has organized successfully several conferences and workshops in India. The institute has produced 450 scientific papers, which were presented at various national and international seminars and conferences.He has So far conducted 93 workshops and 88 scientific papers in national and international journals.His contributions based on academic and scientific activities have resulted in putting Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital as one of the premier institutes in Urology, not only in India but also Internationally. In recognition of its teaching programme, the Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital gained recognition as a teaching institute for postgraduate studies in Nephrology and Urology by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi, since 11th March 1993. Dr.Mahesh Desai has been actively involved in the development and promotion of urological education. The DNB training programme has 4 students in Urology per every year. He is an Examiner for the National Board of Examination, Bangladesh University, National University of Singapore.

Dr.Desai was awarded the prestigious Dr.B.C.Roy National Award for the year 2000 in the Category of "Recognition of the best talents in encouraging the development of Specialties in different branches of Medicine - by the President of India". He has also received several national and international awards such as the President's Gold medal of Urological Society of India, President's Gold Medal of West Zone Chapter of USI, UNO's International Award for Medical Scientific Group in the field of Urology and "Late Dr. Piyush V. Patel Award for "Excellence in Medical Field" at the 105th Annual Day Celebration of Ahmedabad Medical Association on 24th June, 2007.He was felicitated by the All India Journalist Association its Annual meeting held at Nadiad on 5th June, 2005.

He has been a visiting professor at the Duke University,Stanford University,Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, USA,University of Vienna and Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar to name a few.He has been made a Hononary Member of the Singapore Urological Association.

Dr. Mahesh Desai's wide experience and skill has resulted in his being elected as a member of American Association of Genito-Urinary Surgeons. He is the first Indian to have this honour. He was the first Indian to have this honor. He was also a first Indian to deliver a Guest Lecture in the plenary session of American Urological Association's Annual Conference held at Chicago on 30th April, 2003. He is on the Editorial Board of Journal of Endourology and has made valuable contributions, which have gained wide international recognition. He is Chairman, Sub-Speciality, Society International d'Urologie. Under his leadership India hosted for the first time the World Congress on Endourology in November, 2004 in Mumbai.

Under his guidence so far 30 courses in different fields of Urology have been conducted of which more than 2000 delegates have taken the benefit at Jayaramdas Patel Academic Centre.
