Dr. Mahesh Desai is one of the most renowned and best urologists in India with a rich professional experience of over 40 years. He pioneered the modern treatment of various kidney and urological diseases in the country. He is currently the Head of Robotic Surgery at the Centre for Robotic Surgery (CRS), the Medical Director and Managing Trustee at Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH), as well as the Director of Jayaramdas Patel Academic Centre (JPAC), located in Nadiad city of Gujarat state in India.
After completing his education and trainings, he joined hands with Dr. V.V. Desai in 1976 to establish Muljibhai Patel Urological Hospital (MPUH) with the aim of providing making modern treatment available for the common man.
Dr. Mahesh Desai pioneered various new minimally invasive procedures for urology in India and is among the leading robotic surgeons in the country. He is also an expert in prostate related treatments and surgeries – be it open or laparoscopic or robotic prostatectomy. Dr. Desai and his team have performed around 750 highly successful robotic procedures since 2010 when the Centre for Robotic Surgery was first established.
Dr. Mahesh Desai is also an expert in the most modern treatment for stone and other urological diseases. He has developed innovative techniques in Percutaenous Nephrolithotrispy (PCNL), Ureteroscopy, and ESWL, and has done more than 12000 PCNL procedures (among the largest series in the world). He expanded the use of ultrasound in urology and was the first to provide the service of kidney transplantation in Gujarat. More than 1845 Renal Transplants have been done so far at MPUH.
In this long and distinguished career, Dr. Desai has accomplished a lot and has been recognized for his contributions to his profession by a number of national and international bodies. Over the years, he has written over 750 scientific papers in the fields of urology, prostate cancer and robotic surgery, as well as presented his clinical research as a Subject Matter Expert at various national and international medical conferences as a subject matter expert nationally and internationally.
Dr. Mahesh Desai is ably supported by his wife Dr. Nalini Desai (who oversees the entire accounts and administrative division of MPUH) and his son Dr. Mihir Desai, who is also a renowned urologist himself.
