Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy - The MPUH experience

Laparoscopic live donor [LDN] nephrectomy has the advantages of reduced pain and shorter recuperation for the donor without compromising the out come in the recipient. Gill et.al. demonstrated the feasibility of performing LDN in porcine model and thereafter Ratner et.al. reported the first successful human laparoscopic LDN . We started doing LDN at out institute in November 2002.
50 donors were subjected to left nephrectomy and standard transperitoneal laproscopic technique was followed with 3 ports in 7 and 4 in 43 patients.

The greetings came from Gujarat Regional Channel of DOORDARSHAN Network, where in Dr.Mahesh Desai (Chairman Dept. of Urology, MPUH), Dr.Mohan Rajapurkar (Head, Dept. of Nephrology, and MPUH) and Dr.Sishir Gang (Consultant Nephrology, MPUH) were invited to provide information on Kidney Failure and Renal Transplantation. The 30min.program 'Hello Doctor' was telecast on June'6'03.

Dr.Mahesh Desai delivering SIU Lecture at 98th American Urological Association at Chicago. Also seen on the dias Dr. Carl Olsson and Dr.Mebust

The 98th AUA was held in McCormic Convention Center. More than 16000 delegates attended it. There were 1879 presentations, which included 121 videos, 11 special scientific sessions and 69 postgraduate/instructional courses.

MPUH continues to be a segment of advancement of Urology in Asia.
Dr.Mahesh Desai is one of the founder members of the Asian Society of Endourology

Academy of Medicine, Singapore and National University of Singapore invited Dr.Mahesh Desai to be Local Assessor for the Continuous Assessment for Urology. The candidates from various hospitals in Singapore were assessed for merit of work performance during their training period.
